Glitter ban in the EU: A step towards environmental protection

The European Union is known for its comprehensive environmental protection measures. A new chapter in this story will begin on October 15, 2023: From this date, the sale of microplastic particles up to 5 mm in size will be banned throughout the EU. But what does this mean for us and why is this step so important?

What is microplastic?
Microplastics are very small plastic particles that are often found in cosmetics, cleaning products and even glitter. Due to their tiny size, these particles can easily enter the environment, especially our oceans. There they are often ingested by marine life, which can be harmful not only to these animals but also to the entire food chain, including humans.

Why a ban?
There are numerous studies that demonstrate the harmful effects of microplastics on the environment and health. The particles can remain in the environment for decades or even centuries. Once in the oceans, it is almost impossible to remove them. The ban in the EU aims to tackle this problem at its root and drastically reduce the amount of microplastics entering the environment.

What does this mean for consumers?
The immediate result of this ban is that many products that previously contained glitter or other forms of microplastics will either have to be removed from the market or reformulated. This may lead to shortages or changes in the products we are used to. But it also opens doors for innovative, environmentally friendly alternatives.

The glitter ban in the EU shows how serious the Union is about protecting the environment. It is an important step towards a more sustainable and healthier future for all of us. As consumers, we can support this step by consciously choosing products that are free of microplastics and thus showing that we care about the health of our planet.

Will acrylic powder be banned now?

No, because when used correctly (liquid in powder) it is permanently changed. However, this does involve new disposal regulations.

The following are exempted from the prohibition on placing on the market:
  • synthetic polymer microparticles whose physical properties are permanently modified during the intended end use such that the polymer no longer falls within the scope of this entry;
  • synthetic polymer microparticles that are permanently integrated into a solid matrix during their intended end use.
We will provide you with a disposal declaration so that you can dispose of your modeling residues properly in the future.

What can I do now?

If you've been following the press or seen our latest TIKTOK video , you're probably already aware of this.

The environment is important to us. That's why we have decided to only use biodegradable glitter and ecologically compatible inlays and overlays in the future.
